What is a copper-alloy oil-free self-lubricating bushing

An oil-free self-lubricating bushing is a plain bearing designed to run with little or no external oil or grease. In copper-alloy variants the bearing body is a copper-based material, and the lubricant is supplied either by a thin functional layer (oil pockets or a polymer/PTFE running surface) or by solid lubricant set into the metal. Two families dominate, and they should not be selected interchangeably:

Wrapped phosphor-bronze bush — a thin-wall component rolled from phosphor-bronze strip (CuSn8 / EN CW453K), typically with oil pockets or a polymer running layer. Built to ISO 3547 / DIN 1494. Suited to grease or oil supply and moderate loads and speeds.

Inlaid graphite copper-alloy bushing — a solid copper-alloy base (high-tensile brass or cast bronze) with solid graphite plugs set into machined pockets. It runs without external lubrication and is suitable for heavy-load, low-speed or intermittent/oscillating motion.

Why copper alloy is used

Copper alloys are selected for oil-free bushings because of a combination of properties that matter at the sliding interface:

  • Good sliding and anti-seizure behaviour — phosphor bronze and cast bronzes form a stable interface with hardened shafts.
  • Wear resistance — relevant for reciprocating, start-stop and oscillating motion where an oil film is difficult to maintain.
  • Corrosion resistance — bronze performs in industrial atmospheres, fresh and sea water, and many neutral/alkaline media.
  • Mechanical backing — the copper-alloy body carries heavy static and shock loads that polymer or thin coatings cannot.
  • Compact envelope — a solid bushing is thinner than many rolling-bearing arrangements, saving space in equipment design.

Heavy load, low speed, high temperature, hard to lubricate Cast-bronze graphite-plugged bushing
Moderate load, oil/grease available, cost-sensitive thin wall Wrapped CuSn8 bronze bush (ISO 3547)

Sea water or corrosive medium Aluminium-bronze or corrosion-resistant base with graphite
Continuous high speed with oil supply Wrapped bronze with grease; verify PV and speed

Basic safety check: confirm the expected surface pressure is within the maximum surface pressure, the sliding speed is within the maximum sliding speed, and the PV product is within the maximum PV value for the chosen family. Then estimate wear life where a formula is supplied by the supplier.

    Maintenance, troubleshooting and replacement

    • Self-lubricating and graphite types need no scheduled oil or grease; inspect for wear and fit, not for relubrication.
    • Wrapped bronze bushes with grease pockets should be relubricated per the equipment plan; extended relubrication intervals are possible versus unlined bronze.
    • Replace when bore wear exceeds the design clearance, when the bushing shows seizure marks, or when the graphite plugs are depleted in the loaded zone.
    • Troubleshooting — excessive wear often traces to undersized PV, wrong shaft hardness/roughness, misalignment or contamination. Verify shaft hardness (commonly ≥50 HRC) and surface finish (shaft Ra ≤0.8 µm, bushing bore Ra ≤0.4 µm in heavy-duty practice).

    Engineering checklist

    1. Essential — Duty defined: load, speed, PV, temperature, motion type, medium.
    2. Essential — Bushing family selected against the duty, not by appearance.
    3. Essential — Maximum surface pressure, speed and PV confirmed within the chosen family’s envelope (use lower bound).
    4. Essential — Shaft hardness and roughness verified; housing and shaft fits specified (H7 housing, f7 shaft for wrapped per ISO 3547).
    5. Essential — Post-press-fit bore verified; do not rely on free-state catalog bore alone.
    6. Material certificate / RoHS status obtained for the intended product category.
    7. Supplier test report reviewed; values treated as indicative until confirmed by lot inspection.

11.1 What is the difference between a wrapped CuSn8 bronze bushing and an inlaid graphite copper-alloy bushing?

A wrapped CuSn8 bronze bushing is a thin-wall component rolled from phosphor-bronze strip (CuSn8 / EN CW453K) with oil pockets or a polymer layer, suited to grease or oil supply and moderate loads. An inlaid graphite copper-alloy bushing uses a solid copper-alloy base (high-tensile brass or cast bronze) with solid graphite plugs set into machined pockets; it runs without external lubrication and suits heavy-load, low-speed or intermittent motion. The two families have different load, speed and temperature envelopes and should not be selected interchangeably.

11.2 What are the typical load, speed and PV limits for copper-alloy oil-free bushings?

Values are indicative and differ by family. For the lighter inlaid high-tensile-brass class, catalog data shows a maximum surface pressure around 20 to 29 N/mm², a maximum sliding speed of 0.35 to 1.0 m/s depending on lubrication, and a maximum PV around 1.1 to 2.0 N/mm²·m/s, within roughly −40 to +150 °C. For the heavier cast-bronze graphite-plugged class, catalogs report a maximum static load of about 100 to 120 N/mm² (some variants higher), a dry speed near 0.5 m/s (higher when lubricated), a dry PV near 1.5 to 1.65 N/mm²·m/s, and a temperature range up to about +300 to +400 °C. Always confirm against the specific supplier test report and use the lower bound for screening.

11.3 Which tolerances and fits apply to copper-alloy bushings?

For wrapped bronze bushes built to ISO 3547 / DIN 1494, the housing bore is typically H7, the mounted bore is approximately H9, and the shaft is f7 (sometimes f8). For precision-machined inlaid bushings the inner diameter is often held to tolerance class 7 (F7) with an outer diameter around m6, a housing of H7 and a shaft of f7. The catalog bore shrinks after press-fit, so the post-assembly bore must be verified.

    11.4 Are copper-alloy oil-free bushings RoHS compliant?

The CuSn8 phosphor-bronze composition referenced here contains lead at or below about 0.02 percent by weight, which is well within the 0.1 percent homogeneous-material limit and far below the copper-alloy lead exemption (Annex III 6(c), up to 4 percent by weight, currently extended to 30 June 2027). RoHS applies only to electrical and electronic equipment; a standalone bushing is not in scope unless built into EEE. Confirm the current exemption status and obtain the supplier declaration for the intended product category.
