3Material Characteristics & Application Points

Table 4 — Material characteristics (strengths / limitations) and typical application points
Material Key characteristics Main limitations Typical application points
Wrapped phosphor bronze CuSn8
FB090 standard dimple
Low cost, balanced load capacity and wear resistance; dimples retain grease and extend relubrication intervals; impact and vibration tolerant; easy installation (thin-walled rolled) Requires periodic lubrication; reduced life in heavily contaminated environments; thin-wall load limit below cast parts Forklift fork pivots, conveyor idler rollers, crane pulleys, AGV idler wheels — general heavy-load low-speed points
Wrapped flanged deep-dimple
FB090F
Flange provides axial location; deep dimples hold more grease; good tolerance of dirty environments; handles combined radial + axial load Higher cost; larger envelope; not intended for high-speed running Container hub bearing housings, crane travel wheels / boom pivots, axial-location points in heavy-duty wheel sets
Wrapped through-hole type
FB092
Through holes deliver grease directly to the sliding surface; compatible with centralised lubrication; flushes contaminants and keeps the film fresh Effective load area reduced by approx. 15–20%; outer side needs sealing protection Large container equipment wheels, crane pulleys, conveyor idler rollers, mining rail wheels (centralised lubrication)
Graphite-plugged self-lubricating
CuSn8+graphite / JDB
Maintenance-free or low maintenance; good dry-start behaviour; high tolerance of lubrication failure; suits reciprocating / oscillating motion Higher cost than standard type; slightly lower load rating than standard wrapped; graphite limited in strongly oxidising media Forklift mast guides, chain conveyor sprockets, stacker fork extension shafts, hard-to-reach pivot points
PTFE composite
CuSn8 + PTFE
Very low friction; lubrication-free; strong corrosion resistance (chemical media) Limited load capacity; high cost; restricted temperature range (PTFE limits) Stacker guide roller sets, AGV steering pivots, precision guidance in corrosive environments
Cast tin bronze
CuSn10P / CuSn12
Very high load capacity; robust thick-wall structure; impact resistant; complex shapes can be cast High cost; forced lubrication usually required; long production lead time; heavy weight Very heavy load / very low speed duty, gantry crane heavy pivots, heavy machinery bearing shells
Aluminium bronze
CuAl10Ni5Fe4 / C95800
Strong seawater / salt-spray resistance; high strength and wear resistance; resistant to erosion and cavitation Sensitive to shaft wear (hard shaft recommended); high cost; moderate machinability Marine shafting, port machinery salt-spray points, marine propeller shaft bushes, heavy mining slide plates
Sintered bronze
SAE 841 class
Porous oil-filled self-lubrication; long maintenance-free intervals; low volume cost; suited to light-medium load / higher speed Lower load capacity than solid copper alloys; oil content limited by porosity; dust can clog pores Light-medium load higher-speed small bushings, appliance / automotive / office-equipment shafts, precision instruments
Brass
CuZn series
Easy machining, low cost, good thermal conductivity; stable friction when well lubricated Moderate corrosion and wear resistance; lower strength than bronze; not for heavy impact Low-speed well-lubricated points, guide sleeves, dowel pin bushes, low-cost pivots
Steel-backed bimetal
Steel-backed bimetal
Steel shell gives high rigidity; thin-wall high load; compact envelope Steel shell can corrode in salt-spray environments; complex processing, higher cost Engine bearing shells, high-load thin-wall space-constrained points, hydraulic pumps / motors
Machined oil-groove type
Machined oil groove
Grooves feed oil fully across the surface; good heat dissipation; suited to high-speed continuous running Depends on a forced lubrication system; higher maintenance cost; fails without oil supply High-speed continuous-running points, large slewing rings, oil-bath lubrication systems

6Data Sources & Review Notes

This report is based primarily on the 5 source sheets (Overview / Material Technical Data / Applications and Fields / Solutions Comparison / Maintenance Plan & Troubleshoot), with key parameters cross-checked against industry standards. Three data points deserve attention:

Review finding 1 — Seawater resistance

The source sheet rates CuSn8 seawater corrosion as “Excellent”; however, wrapped phosphor bronze has limited resistance to seawater / ammonia / strongly oxidising media and is not the first choice for continuous salt-spray duty. For marine / port heavy-load applications, aluminium bronze (CuAl10Ni5Fe4 / C95800) or a protective coating is recommended.

Review finding 2 — Temperature range

The source data is inconsistent at two points: Overview states −40 … +150 °C (with some cases at +300 °C), while Material Technical Data states −100 … +200 °C. Industry baseline for the base material is −100 … +200 °C; the actual operating range is limited by the lubricant type (grease-lubricated duty is typically −40 … +150 °C).

Review finding 3 — Dynamic load rating

The source sheet lists dynamic load 40 N/mm² and static load 120 N/mm²; industry wrapped-bearing catalogues list dynamic ratings that vary by supplier and dimple design (40 up to approx. 100–120 N/mm²). Selection should treat the PV value (≤ 2.8 N/mm²·m/s, grease-lubricated) as the primary safety constraint and refer to the specific product catalogue.

Maintenance & replacement reference

Source maintenance recommendations (excerpt): visual inspection weekly, lubrication check monthly, wear measurement quarterly, temperature monitoring (normal running rise < 40 °C, stop immediately above 60 °C). Replacement thresholds: radial clearance ≥ 0.25 mm, wear depth ≥ 0.5 mm, surface roughness Ra > 12.5, vibration ≥ 7.1 mm/s. Full thresholds are given in the source Maintenance sheet.

Disclaimer. This report is an engineering selection reference compiled from the source dataset and public standards (ISO 3547, DIN 1494, DIN 17662, GB/T 5231, GB/T 1176, GB/T 23894-2009, EN 1652, ASTM B103, SAE J460, etc.). Values shown are nominal; verify specific products against the manufacturer’s official data sheet. Cross-standard grade comparison must follow the standard version referenced in the purchase contract. Selection and suitability remain the responsibility of the design engineer. Friction, wear and life data are indicative only and depend on lubrication, surface finish, alignment and duty cycle.
