Bronze Bearing With Groove Design Guide
Oil Holes and Oil Grooves
Oil holes and oil grooves are essential features of a journal bearing, serving to introduce and distribute lubricants effectively. Oil holes in the sleeve bearing are the simplest and most effective method for introducing lubricant into the bearing area, but they must be located in the unloaded area of the bearing. Alternatively, the oil hole can be positioned in the shaft, allowing oil to be centrifuged into the sleeve-bearing area in equal or greater amounts.
Grooving is rarely necessary in short bearings with a length-to-diameter (L/D) ratio of 0.5 or less, unless high surface speeds demand a larger volume of oil to dissipate the generated frictional heat. In such cases, an annular or circular groove can enhance lubrication effectiveness.
For bearings with an L/D ratio of 1 or more, oil grooves may be necessary depending on the speed, load, and viscosity of the lubricant. Grooves are generally required for grease-lubricated bearings since grease lacks the mobility of oil and is less effective at dissipating frictional heat.
Oil inlet holes should be at least as wide as the groove they supply. Smaller inlet holes can become blocked with sludge or debris, restricting lubricant flow and potentially leading to bearing failure due to lubrication starvation. Inlet holes should be chamfered with all edges rounded to facilitate unrestricted lubricant entry.
All grooves should be blended and rounded to minimize sharp edges that could scrape the lubricant and hinder the formation of an oil film. In high-speed or pressure-lubricated bearings, a small “V” or vent groove may be added to remove entrapped air or allow debris to escape, permitting slight oil leakage to reduce frictional heat.
Types of Grooving
Oil Hole
A single oil hole without any grooving is commonly used in short bearings with an L/D ratio of 0.5 or less. Oil can flow axially up to 1/2 inch on either side of the centrally located oil inlet hole, which should be positioned in the unloaded area to ensure equal oil distribution. Bearings with a single oil hole can have approximately three times the load-bearing capacity of bearings with an annular or circumferential groove of the same length.
Straight Axial Groove
Used when the bearing length exceeds an L/D ratio of 1.5, the straight axial groove stops short of each end by 1/8 to 1/4 inch and must be located in the unloaded area. This groove type is generally employed when lubrication is pressure-fed or when the direction of the load varies, making it difficult to locate a consistent low-pressure region.
Circular or Annular Groove
This groove is used when lubrication is pressure-fed or the direction of the load varies. It divides the bearing into two shorter bearings, which do not carry the same load as a single, uninterrupted bearing. The groove must be placed exactly at the center of the bearing; an off-center groove can cause one half of the bearing to operate with greater eccentricity than the other. This groove can be combined with a straight axial groove, provided the axial groove is located in the unloaded area. A bearing with a circular groove has about 2.5 times the oil flow of a bearing with only an oil hole.
Oval Groove
A single or double oval groove connected to an oil entry hole distributes the lubricant more effectively. While the groove passes angularly through the loaded area, it only slightly affects load pressure. The oval groove should stop short of each end by 1/8 to 1/4 inch unless lubricant is introduced from the bearing end, in which case the groove should open into the reservoir.
Figure-8 Groove
A modification of the double-oval groove, the figure-8 groove is generally preferred in grease-lubricated applications or when greater exposure of graphite is desired in graphited bearings. For additional information on recommended groove designs, please consult the chart at the front of this guide.
“V-Shaped” Groove
V-shaped and radiused cross-section grooves are best suited for oil lubrication. The blended or rounded groove edges promote the formation of the oil film.
Rectangular Cross-Section Groove
This groove type is better suited for grease, graphite, or other solid lubricants. It offers a larger surface area for the lubricant to adhere to and provides a larger reservoir for grease.
If two bearings are used in line in an oil or grease-lubricated mode, a central reservoir should be located between them, at least twice the wall thickness or more. Any angular groove should open only on the reservoir side if the lubricant is not introduced along the bearing length. Oil or grease grooves should extend to within 1/8 to 1/4 inch of each bearing end when using a centrally located inlet hole.
Groove Dimensions and Applications
The groove width and depth depend on the volume of oil required to maintain lubricant viscosity within the operating temperature range. The following are general guidelines for groove dimensions based on the bearing bore diameter (D):
- Precision-Groove Applications: Groove width (W) = 0.06 × D; Groove depth (Depth) = 0.5 × W
- Medium-Groove Applications: Groove width (W) = 0.08 × D; Groove depth (Depth) = 0.5 × W
- Loose-Groove Applications: Groove width (W) = 0.10 × D; Groove depth (Depth) = 0.5 × W
While standard print tolerances are often specified as ±0.005 to ±0.010 inches, the width and depth of grooves can be specified with less restrictive tolerances depending on the application.
In summary, the appropriate design and placement of oil holes and grooves are critical for the effective lubrication of journal bearings. Proper consideration of bearing dimensions, load conditions, and lubricant type will ensure optimal performance and longevity of the bearing system.
A groove bushing is a specific type of bushing (also known as a plain bearing or sleeve bearing) that has one or more grooves machined or formed into its surface, typically the inner diameter (ID) but sometimes the outer diameter (OD).
Here’s a more detailed explanation:
-
Bushing Basics:
-
A bushing is essentially a cylindrical sleeve inserted into a housing to provide a bearing surface for a rotating or sliding shaft.
-
Its primary functions are to reduce friction, wear, guide movement, and support loads between two components.
-
-
The Role of Grooves:
-
Lubrication Distribution: This is the most common and critical reason for grooves. The grooves act as reservoirs and channels to hold and distribute lubricant (like oil or grease) effectively across the bearing surface. This ensures a consistent lubricating film between the bushing and the shaft, which is vital for:
-
Reducing friction
-
Preventing metal-to-metal contact
-
Dissipating heat
-
Extending the life of both the bushing and the shaft
-
-
Debris Trapping: In some applications, grooves can help trap small wear particles or contaminants, preventing them from damaging the bearing surfaces.
-
Sealing Assist: Sometimes, an outer groove might be designed to hold an O-ring or another type of seal.
-
-
Types of Grooves:
Grooves come in various patterns depending on the application, type of motion (rotating, oscillating, linear), and lubrication method:-
Straight Axial Grooves: Run parallel to the bushing’s axis. Good for grease lubrication or distributing oil in linear motion.
-
Circular/Annular Grooves: A ring-like groove around the circumference. Often used as a reservoir or distribution point, sometimes connected by axial grooves. Can be used for lubricant injection.
-
Spiral or Helical Grooves: Wind around the inside surface like a screw thread (can be right-hand or left-hand). Excellent for distributing lubricant during rotation, effectively “pumping” it along the shaft.
-
Figure-Eight Grooves: A more complex pattern that provides excellent lubricant distribution for both rotating and oscillating motions.
-
Double Loop / Double Figure-Eight: Variations for even more thorough coverage.
-
-
Materials:
Groove bushings are made from various bearing materials, similar to other bushings:-
Bronze Alloys (e.g., C93200/SAE 660 Bearing Bronze): Very common due to good strength, wear resistance, and machinability.
-
Steel or Stainless Steel: For higher loads or specific environmental conditions (e.g., corrosion resistance). Often hardened.
-
Bi-metallic: A steel backing with a bronze or other bearing material layer.
-
Polymers (e.g., Nylon, PTFE, Acetal): For lower loads, self-lubricating properties, or corrosion resistance.
-
Oil-Impregnated Sintered Bronze: Porous bronze filled with oil, where grooves can help replenish surface oil.
-
-
Applications:
Groove bushings are used extensively where reliable lubrication is critical under load and motion:-
Internal Combustion Engines (e.g., connecting rod small ends, camshafts)
-
Transmissions and Gearboxes
-
Hydraulic Cylinders (rod guides, piston guides)
-
Construction Equipment (pivot points for booms, buckets)
-
Industrial Machinery (conveyor systems, machine tools, presses)
-
Agricultural Equipment
-
Suspension Systems
-
In summary, a groove bushing is a vital component designed to enhance lubrication delivery within a plain bearing interface, leading to improved perfo

What Are Grease Grooves in Bronze Bushings?
Grease grooves are precisely machined channels along the inner surface of a bronze bushing. Their purpose is to evenly distribute lubricants—typically grease—across the bearing interface. Acting as both reservoirs and distribution pathways, these grooves maintain a continuous lubricating film that separates the shaft from the bushing. This lubrication prevents metal-to-metal contact, reduces wear, dissipates heat, and removes contaminants from the running surface.
VIIPLUS offers a diverse range of grease groove configurations manufactured from premium alloys such as C93200 (SAE 660) tin bronze, CuSn6Pb6Zn3, and various aluminum bronze grades. For applications requiring minimal maintenance, we also supply graphite-plugged bushings with enhanced self-lubricating capabilities.

Why it’s ideal for grease:
The design provides excellent grease retention, making it suitable for long-term, low-maintenance lubrication. It is recommended for grease-only systems due to its superior retention compared to oil.
Applications: Construction equipment, automotive transmissions, industrial pumping systems.
2. Double Figure-Eight Groove
This pattern consists of two overlapping figure-eight loops, offering broad surface coverage and load-sharing capability. It provides high stiffness and effective vibration damping.
Why it’s ideal for grease:
Perfect for low-speed, high-load applications where grease fills the intricate pathways, ensuring consistent lubrication. Not recommended for oil systems.
Applications: Heavy machinery, metallurgical equipment, aerospace assemblies.
Other Common Groove Types
-
Straight Axial Grooves – Best for linear or oscillating motion.
-
Spiral/Helical Grooves – Promote axial lubricant flow in rotating shafts.
-
Circular/Annular Grooves – Central grease reservoirs for pressure-fed systems.
-
Rectangular-Section Grooves – Ideal for grease lubrication due to increased storage volume.
For graphite-plugged bronze bushings, these groove designs further enhance dry-running performance, making them suitable for clean or food-grade environments.
Grease vs. Oil: Why Grease Grooves Matter
Although both oil and grease provide lubrication, grease grooves are specifically optimized for grease’s thicker consistency. Grease is especially effective in low-speed, high-load operations (up to 20 m/min) and offers superior sealing against dust and contaminants.
Advantages of grease:
-
Higher load support (up to 150 MPa)
-
Longer lubrication retention
-
Easier sealing and maintenance
Best practice:
Use rectangular or flat-bottom grooves for grease. Use V-shaped grooves for oil to support hydrodynamic film formation.
VIIPLUS generally recommends double loop and double figure-eight designs for grease lubrication only, as they maximize retention and provide balanced distribution.
