Engineering Note: For maximum corrosion resistance in marine environments, C95400 is generally preferred over C86300. For maximum yield strength in high-shock applications, specify C86300.
2. Design Parameters & Shafting Requirements
Shaft Specifications
-
Surface Finish: Optimal surface roughness is 8–16 µin (RMS). In less critical applications, a finish of 32 µin (RMS) may be acceptable.
-
Plating Restrictions: Avoid Zinc or Cadmium plating. These deposits are soft and can cold-flow (“pickle”) into bearing clearances, causing lubrication starvation and premature failure.
-
Material Recommendation: Carbon steels with ~0.40% Carbon content (e.g., AISI 1137–1141) offer an ideal balance of hardness and machinability. For corrosion resistance, hard chrome plating is recommended. If stainless steel is mandatory, specify 400-series (preferably 416, heat-treated to maximum hardness) rather than 300-series austenitic grades, which exhibit lower load-carrying capacity.
Dimensional Geometry
-
Wall Thickness:
-
ID < 0.250″: Minimum wall thickness = 1/32″.
-
ID ≥ 0.250″: Recommended wall thickness = 0.125 × Shaft Diameter.
-
-
Length-to-Diameter Ratio (L/D): Do not exceed 4:1. For diameters < 0.250″, a reduced L/D ratio is advised to prevent binding due to misalignment.
3. Load & Speed Validation: The PV Formula
-
Max P (Pressure): 2,000 PSI
-
Max V (Velocity): 1,200 SFM (Surface Feet per Minute)
-
Max PV: 50,000

5. Lubrication Engineering: Grooving & Solid Lubricants
Oil Groove Selection
-
Boundary Lubrication (V ≤ 10 SFM): Use Double Ring or Figure-Eight grooves to maximize grease retention.
-
Mixed Film (10–25 SFM): Most common industrial state.
-
Straight Grooves: Best for long shafts; must be located in the unloaded zone.
-
Annular Grooves: Ideal for variable loads with pressure-fed systems.
-
Combination Grooves: Suitable for variable loads with splash lubrication.
-
-
Full Film (V ≥ 25 SFM): Any mixed-film configuration is applicable, provided edges are deburred to prevent oil churning.
Graphite Plugged Bearings (Solid Lubrication)
-
Clearance Adjustment: Increase the bearing ID by 0.001–0.002″ (via reaming or oversized ordering) to compensate for graphite displacement.
-
Pre-lubrication: Apply a light coat of compatible grease prior to initial run-in to prevent start-up scoring.
6. VIIPLUS SOLUTIONS® Custom Manufacturing Capabilities

Metal Bushing (Lubricated Metal) -Self-Lubricating Bushing Materials
Bushings are specialized, self-lubricating metal components widely utilized across various industries due to their durability and low maintenance requirements. Self-lubricating metal bushings are engineered to function without additional lubrication in numerous applications, thereby minimizing maintenance needs. These bushings are available in various series and configurations, such as flanged bushings and split bearings, to meet specific application requirements.
