1. Cylindrical Bushings (Sleeve Bearings)

The Industry Standard for Radial Loads

This is the fundamental design for supporting rotating or oscillating shafts. Unlike a split-wrapped bush, these are solid cast, providing superior resistance to deformation under heavy static loads.

  • Function: Primary support for radial loads (perpendicular to the shaft).

  • Installation Logic: Designed for Press-Fit (Interference Fit) installation into the housing. This secures the bushing without additional fasteners.

  • Size Capability:

    • ID Range: 20mm – 300mm+ (Standard ISO sizes available).

  • Expert Note: Ensure your housing tolerance (typically H7) matches the bushing OD (typically m6 or r6). A loose fit will cause the bushing to spin in the housing, leading to catastrophic failure.

2. Flanged Bushings

Integrated Thrust & Location

A cylindrical bushing supports radial load, but it cannot handle axial (side) force, nor can it locate itself axially. The flanged design solves this by integrating a washer into the sleeve.

  • Function: Handles Radial Loads (on the sleeve) + Light Axial/Thrust Loads (on the flange face). Also acts as a positive stop for precise axial positioning.

  • Why Choose This: Eliminates the need for a separate thrust washer, reducing part count and assembly time.

  • Size Capability:

    • ID Range: 20mm – 200mm+

  • Expert Note: The flange is part of the casting, not welded on. This ensures structural integrity under thrust loads.

3. Wear Plates & Guide Bars

The Solution for Linear Motion

Rotating shafts aren’t the only things that wear out. Reciprocating slides (in molds, presses, and heavy machinery) require flat, self-lubricating surfaces to prevent galling.

  • Wear Plates: Flat plates used to line the sliding surfaces of heavy equipment.

  • Guide Bars (Gibs): Rectangular bars, often machined with specific profiles, used to guide linear motion in die sets and machine tools.

  • The Physics: The graphite plug pattern is critical here. It must be arranged (staggered) so that the sliding motion overlaps the lubrication zones, ensuring no “dry lanes” exist on the mating surface.

  • Customization: Available in standard rectangles or custom profiles (V-grooves, L-shapes).

4. Thrust Washers

Dedicated Axial Load Support

When axial loads (forces parallel to the shaft) are too high for a simple flange, a dedicated thrust washer is required. These are essentially flat rings with graphite plugs on one or both faces.

  • Function: Prevents metal-on-metal contact at the end of a shaft or pivot point.

  • Application: Essential in crane pivots, excavator linkages, and marine rudder stocks where side-loads are massive.

  • Size Capability:

    • OD Range: 30mm – 400mm+

  • Expert Note: Always ensure the backing surface is flat and rigid. A warped backing plate will cause point-loading on the washer, cracking the graphite plugs.

5. Custom Shapes (Bespoke Machining)

“If You Can Draw It, We Can Cast It”

Standard catalogs cover 80% of applications. The remaining 20% require specific geometries. Because the base material is Cast Bronze, it is highly machinable before the graphite is inserted.

  • Capabilities:

    • Spherical Plain Bearings: For misalignment compensation.

    • Half-Shells (Split Bearings): For applications where the shaft cannot be removed.

    • Grooved/Complex Profiles: Oil grooves (if auxiliary lube is desired) or specific mounting features.

  • The Process:

    1. Casting: Near-net shape casting of the bronze alloy.

    2. Machining: CNC turning/milling to precise tolerances.

    3. Drilling: Precision drilling of the plug holes (calculating depth to maintain wall strength).

    4. Plugging: High-pressure insertion of the graphite compound.
