Specialized in JDB Graphite-Embedded Bearings

A JDB bearing is a solid-lubricant-embedded, truly oilless bearing: a high-strength bronze base with graphite plugs that lubricate the shaft as it moves. No oil lines, no relubrication, no downtime. VIIPLUS manufactures graphite bearings in JDB650 (CuZn25Al6Fe3Mn3) and lead-free grades for metallurgy, mining, and high-heat applications.

When equipment runs hot, dirty, or inaccessible, conventional oil-lubricated bushings fail — the lubricant carbonizes, washes out, or simply cannot be supplied. A graphite plugged bearing removes that failure mode entirely. Below is the full picture of how JDB graphite bronze bushings are built, rated, and applied, and how to specify one for your duty cycle.

What Is a JDB Graphite Bearing?

JDB stands for a family of solid-lubricating bearings built on the same principle: a load-carrying metal matrix (bronze or brass) with holes drilled or cast into the sliding surface, then filled with graphite or a graphite-based solid lubricant. Under load and motion, a thin transfer film of graphite forms on the shaft, giving a low-friction, self-replenishing layer. The result is an oil free bearing that performs without any external lubricant.

Two common constructions exist: a single-alloy graphite plugged bearing (solid bronze with plugs) and a bimetal version with a steel backing plus a bronze layer carrying the plugs (higher strength, thinner wall). Both deliver the same oilless behavior; the choice depends on housing strength and wall thickness.

At a glance, the JDB approach gives maintenance and procurement three concrete wins: no scheduled lubrication (so no grease nipples, lube routes, or missed intervals), tolerance of the heat and contamination that destroy oil films, and a long, predictable life that makes spare-parts planning simple. Those are the reasons graphite-embedded bearings now appear from steel mills to food lines — and why they are usually the first oilless option we propose for heavy, hot, or dirty joints.

Conventional oil- or grease-lubricated bushings fail in three predictable ways that a JDB graphite bearing avoids: the lubricant carbonizes and forms varnish at high temperature; it washes out in water or solvent; and it attracts abrasive dust that turns the contact zone into a lapping compound. By contrast, the solid lubricant is part of the part itself — there is no external supply to break down, starve, or contaminate. That is why oil free bearings are specified for continuous-process equipment where an unplanned stoppage costs far more than the component.

Oilless Bushings, Bronze Alloy Selection Matrix

The performance of an oilless bushing under high loads or corrosive environments relies entirely on its base alloy. Below is a structured guide to our commonly used bronze materials.

CuZn25Al5 (High-Strength Manganese Bronze) – The Industry Standard

This is the default and most widely specified base material for heavy-duty applications.

  • Key Traits: Excellent mechanical strength (Hardness 190–220 HB) and high static load capacity (up to 150 N/mm²).

  • Optimal Environment: General machinery, heavy construction equipment, and high-load/low-speed joints.

  • Standard Equivalent: ASTM B505 C86300 / EN 1982 CuZn25Al5Mn4Fe3-C.

CuAl10Ni (Nickel Aluminum Bronze) – The Extreme Environment Choice

Engineered for situations where standard brass or bronze would degrade.

  • Key Traits: Exceptional corrosion resistance and broad temperature tolerance (-200°C to +400°C). High resistance to shock loads.

  • Optimal Environment: Marine engineering, offshore platforms, chemical pumps, and high-temperature furnace mechanisms.

  • Standard Equivalent: ASTM B148 C95800 / EN 1982 CC333G.

CuSn12 / CuSn12Pb (Tin Bronze & Leaded Bronze) – The Balanced Performer

Often referred to as “gear bronze,” this alloy provides an excellent balance of wear resistance and smooth sliding properties.

  • Key Traits: Good anti-friction behavior, suitable for moderate speeds (up to 1.0 m/s), and resistant to fresh water and oils.

  • Optimal Environment: Turbines, medium-speed gearboxes, and general industrial automation.

  • Standard Equivalent: ASTM B427 C90800 / EN 1982 CC483K.

CuSn7ZnPb (RG7) – The Economical Alternative

A highly versatile, cost-effective alloy for standard conditions.

  • Key Traits: Adequate load capacity for light-to-medium duty applications with moderate corrosion resistance.

  • Optimal Environment: Automotive hinges, agricultural attachments, and general-purpose light-duty bearings.

  • Standard Equivalent: ASTM B505 C93200 (SAE 660) / EN 1982 CC493K.

JDB vs PTFE Composite vs Bronze

JDB vs PTFE Composite vs Bronze

Three oilless or low-maintenance routes are often compared. Pick by duty, not by habit:

Option Max Load Max Speed Max Temp Best For
JDB graphite Very high Low–medium ~300–400°C Heavy, hot, dirty
PTFE composite Medium High ~200°C cont. Fast, light, precise
Oil bronze (grooved) High Medium Limited by oil Lubricated, long-life

Performance depends heavily on plug pattern. Plugs are arranged as a grid, in rings, or as discrete pockets sized to the contact area and sliding direction. More plug area means more lubricant supply but slightly less base-metal load surface, so layout is a balance. For continuous sliding we concentrate plugs along the motion path; for oscillating or static-load joints we distribute them evenly.

Load capacity is set by the base alloy (JDB650 and JDB300 handle very high specific loads) and by maintaining adequate shaft hardness (typically ≥45 HRC) so the graphite film transfers cleanly. Proper surface finish on the shaft also improves film formation and extends life.

In practice, specify the plug layout together with the fit: a standard interference fit into a finished housing bore, with running clearance set by the shaft tolerance (commonly the shaft at h8/h9 against an H7 bore). Overly tight clearance starves the plug transfer; excessive clearance lets the shaft rock and pits the plugs. Our engineering team reviews the drawing and proposes plug pattern, fit, and any chamfers so the bearing seats correctly on first assembly.

JDB graphite bearings earn their keep where oil cannot survive:

    • Metallurgy — continuous casting guides, rollers, furnace door hinges, cooling-bed slides.
    • Mining & quarrying — crusher toggles, conveyor idlers, vibrating equipment, in dust and water.
    • High-temperature ovens & kilns — conveyor bearings, kiln car wheels, baking molds.
    • Injection molding & die-casting — moving plates and ejection systems exposed to heat.
    • Heavy machinery — construction and agricultural equipment pivots under shock loads.

The common thread is inaccessibility: these are joints where a technician cannot reach a grease nipple on a sensible schedule, or where the lubricant would simply not survive. In each case the graphite bronze bushing is selected not because it is cheaper up front, but because it removes a recurring failure point from a critical path.

Standard JDB bushes follow common bore/OD/length series, and graphite-plug positions are laid out to project drawings or to DIN/ISO-style bore standards. We supply sleeves, flanges, thrust washers, and plates, and machine special outside diameters and plug arrays to order. Tolerances are matched to the housing and shaft fit you specify.

Plug diameter and pitch are selected from experience-based tables tied to bore size — larger bores take larger, more widely spaced plugs; small precision parts take fine patterns. If your assembly has a defined grease or lubrication standard to coexist with, tell us: we can zone the plugs away from existing oil features so the two systems do not conflict.

Installation mirrors a press-fit bronze bushing: press the JDB bearing into a finished housing bore with controlled interference, keep the bore axis true, and protect the graphite plugs from impact during insertion. To prevent rotation under torque, use a flange, a locating pin, or a keyway. Avoid contaminating the sliding face, and run the shaft hard enough initially to seat the graphite transfer film.

After fitting, inspect for full circumferential contact and confirm the shaft enters without scoring the plugs. Because there is no break-in grease, the first cycles are when the transfer film forms — keep loads within rating during this period. With correct installation, a JDB bearing typically runs for the full design life with no further service, which is the whole point of specifying an oilless design.

    What does JDB mean?

JDB refers to a solid-lubricant-embedded bearing: a bronze-alloy base (usually high-tensile brass or manganese bronze) with graphite or other solid-lubricant plugs pressed into machined holes. The plugs release lubricant during operation, so the bearing runs oilless without external grease.

What is the maximum temperature for a JDB graphite bearing?

In dry friction the graphite/solid-lubricant type typically works from -40°C up to about 300–400°C, depending on the base alloy and plug material. This makes it suitable for ovens, furnaces, and continuous high-temperature duty where oil would break down.

JDB vs PTFE — which should I choose?

JDB carries higher loads and tolerates much higher temperatures, but at lower sliding speeds. PTFE(steel-backed PTFE composite) is better for higher speed and lower load with very low friction. Choose JDB for heavy, slow, hot duty; choose PTFE for faster, lighter, cooler duty.

Can JDB replace a bronze bushing with oil lubrication?

Yes, in maintenance-free or high-temperature scenarios a JDB graphite bearing can directly replace an oil-lubricated bronze bushing, eliminating the grease line and reducing downtime. Verify load, speed, and temperature against the JDB rating before substitution.

Do you offer lead-free JDB grades?

Yes. We provide lead-free and environmentally compliant alloy variants for applications with RoHS/REACH or food-contact requirements. Specify your compliance need when requesting a quote.
