When selecting an appropriate alloy for your application, it’s critical to balance the different properties needed to achieve a durable, low-maintenance solution. Some of the most common factors influencing alloy choice include:

    • Bearing Load and Velocity: Higher loads and speeds often require alloys with greater strength and fatigue resistance.
    • Type of Movement: Oscillating or intermittent motion might benefit from alloys that can handle variable forces and resist galling.
    • Temperature and Environment: Extreme temperatures or corrosive environments call for materials with strong thermal stability and excellent corrosion resistance.
    • Mechanical Properties: Shear strength, fatigue strength, and deformability dictate how well the alloy will withstand continuous use.
    • Compatibility and Hardness Differential: Ensuring that the bearing material is compatible with the shaft material can prevent excessive wear. A proper hardness differential minimizes galling and extends the lifespan of the components.
    • Wear Resistance and corrosion resistance: Selecting an alloy that provides a good balance of wear and corrosion resistance is often key to achieving maintenance-free operation.
    • Cost: While higher-performance alloys may provide longer service life and reduced maintenance, cost considerations must also be factored in to determine the overall value.

In many industrial and structural applications, high-strength bronze alloys are commonly chosen due to their reliable performance. This Table  (as referenced) provides an overview of commonly used high-strength bronzes, while specialty alloys can be selected for unique or demanding conditions. The correct choice ultimately depends on a thorough analysis of the operating environment and the specific requirements of all bearing system components.

Cast Bronze Alloys in Bearing Applications: A Structured Overview

    1. Introduction to Cast Bronze Alloys
Cast bronze alloys have been a cornerstone in bearing applications for centuries due to their unmatched versatility. By alloying copper with elements like tin, aluminum, or manganese, properties such as strength, wear resistance, and corrosion tolerance can be tailored to meet diverse industrial needs. Their adaptability makes them superior to many alternative materials in balancing performance requirements.
    2. Key Properties and Alloying Elements
      • Copper Base: Provides inherent corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity.
      • Alloying Elements: Tin (enhances hardness), aluminum (improves strength and oxidation resistance), manganese (adds toughness), and lead or graphite (for self-lubrication).
      • Customizable Traits: Mechanical strength, shock resistance, lubrication efficiency, and fatigue resistance are adjusted based on application demands.
    3. Common Bronze Alloys for Bearings
      • Aluminum Bronze:
        • Composition: Copper + aluminum (up to 14%), iron, nickel.
        • Properties: Exceptional high-load capacity, wear resistance, and corrosion tolerance. Ideal for marine and heavy machinery bearings.
      • Manganese Bronze:
        • Composition: Copper + zinc, manganese, and small amounts of aluminum or iron.
        • Properties: High tensile strength and shock absorption. Used in gears, bushings, and applications with dynamic stresses (e.g., automotive suspensions).
    4. Self-Lubricating Bronze Bearings
      • Design: Incorporate lubricating agents (e.g., graphite plugs, oil-impregnated pores) to reduce friction without external grease.
      • Applications: Suitable for maintenance-free or hard-to-access environments, such as conveyor systems or agricultural equipment.
    5. Manufacturing Processes
      • Casting Methods:
        • Centrifugal Casting: Produces dense, uniform structures for cylindrical parts (e.g., bushings).
        • Sand Casting: Allows complex shapes and large components.
        • Continuous Casting: Efficient for standardized profiles like rods or tubes.
        • Forged Castings: Likely refers to forged bronze components for enhanced grain structure and strength in high-stress applications.
    6. Compliance and Quality Assurance
      • Standards: Manufactured to ASTM (e.g., B22, B271) and ISO specifications, ensuring material consistency and performance.
      • Testing: Physical (hardness, tensile strength) and chemical analyses are available to verify compliance, critical for aerospace, energy, or safety-critical industries.

    Why Bronze?
Bronze alloys excel in environments requiring a balance of durability, thermal management, and corrosion resistance. While alternatives like polymers or composites may offer lightweight benefits, bronze remains irreplaceable in high-load, high-temperature, or corrosive settings. Limitations (e.g., weight, cost) are offset by longevity and reliability in demanding applications.

This structured approach highlights the adaptability and enduring relevance of cast bronze alloys in meeting modern engineering challenges.

    SHAPES
Self-lubricating bearings are available in a variety of shapes tailored to specific applications, load directions, and movement types. Below are the most commonly used shapes:

    Bushings
One-piece sleeve bushings are widely used for both rotary and linear motion applications. These bushings are ideal for situations where the shaft load is primarily radial (perpendicular to the shaft axis). Depending on the size of the bearing, lubricating recesses may either pass all the way through the bearing wall or be partial for larger bushings. For easy disassembly and reassembly, split bushings are offered, either matched (split before final machining to ensure precise 180° halves) or unmatched (split after machining, leading to slight variations from perfect halves). Matched halves are marked to ensure proper assembly, maintaining concentricity.

    Washers
Washers are used to manage end thrust when the shaft load is aligned with the shaft axis. They can be used on their own or in conjunction with sleeve bushings, and are designed to be lubricated on one or both sides depending on the application.

    Flange Bushings
Flange bushings combine the features of sleeve bushings and washers in a single unit. These bushings are ideal for applications where the shaft load has both axial and radial components. The flanges can be lubricated for thrust load applications or left without lubrication when the bushing serves merely as a spacer.

    Spherical Bearings
Self-aligning spherical bearings are designed to accommodate radial loads and some degree of misalignment, which may occur due to structural or shaft deflections under load. These bearings consist of an inner component (gimbal) with a cylindrical inside diameter for shaft rotation and a spherical convex outside diameter, paired with an outer component (race) with a matching concave inside diameter. Either of the two components can be lubricated.

    Plates
Bearing plates are used to support both longitudinal and transverse movement under vertical and horizontal loads. They are available in single-piece constructions, up to 144″ in length for most bearing alloys. Typically, bearing plates are fastened using machine screws or secured with welded bars.

Radial bearing plates feature both a curved radial surface and a flat surface, with lubrication available on either or both sides. The radial surface, installed with a corresponding curved mating plate, allows for deflection and rotation. The flat surface accommodates linear expansion and contraction. Spherical bearing plates have lubricated concave or convex spherical surfaces to allow rotation in any direction. These plates are available to accommodate sliding, rotation, and angular misalignment, and can be paired with spherical components, sole plates, base plates, and anchorage for additional support.

    SIZING
Several factors influence bearing design, but the following guidelines are typically applicable for most self-lubricating bearings. Available in both inch and metric sizes, these bearings are generally supplied finished to meet the precise specifications of each application.

    Inside Diameter
The nominal inside diameter of a bushing is determined by the shaft diameter. For optimal performance, the shaft should be as strong and rigid as possible to minimize frictional resistance and power loss, enabling the use of the smallest practical shaft diameter.

    Outside Diameter
The outside diameter of a bushing is based on the required wall thickness and housing bore size. To calculate the outside diameter, add twice the recommended wall thickness to the inside diameter of the bushing. Refer to Tables 2 and 3 for recommended wall thicknesses for self-lubricating bushings. The values provided are suitable for most applications, depending on the shaft load, bushing diameter, and the yield strength of the bearing material. Generally, lower-strength alloys require the maximum wall thickness, while higher-strength alloys can utilize the minimum thickness.

    Length
The bearing length is determined by the projected area needed to handle the radial load. It can be calculated by dividing the shaft load by the desired bearing pressure multiplied by the inside diameter. Typically, the length-to-diameter (L/D) ratio of a bushing should be between 1.0 and 2.0 for optimal performance. Shorter lengths can result in over-stressing the bearing, while longer lengths may cause edge loading. Bearings designed within the recommended L/D ratio usually tolerate shaft misalignment and shock loads without excessive wear.

    Flange and Washer Thickness
The thickness of a bushing flange or thrust washer generally matches the wall thickness of the corresponding bushing, as shown in Tables 2 and 3.

    Plate Thickness
The thickness of bearing plates should be proportional to the overall size of the plate, with a minimum thickness of one-half inch (12.7 mm) recommended for most flat plates.

    Key:

    • ASTM B505: The standard alloy designation.
    • Closest Alloys: Equivalent or closely related alloys.
    • Type of Alloy: Classification of the alloy (e.g., Tin bronzes, Lead bronzes, etc.).

The production of bronze bearings involves several stages, from raw material selection to the final product. Here’s a step-by-step overview of the process:

    1. Raw Material Selection

    • Bronze Alloy Composition: Bronze bearings are typically made from copper-based alloys, often with tin as the primary alloying element (e.g., C93200 or SAE 660 bronze). Other elements like lead, zinc, or phosphorus may be added to improve machinability, wear resistance, or lubrication properties.
    • Material Quality: High-quality raw materials are essential to ensure the final product meets performance standards.

    2. Melting and Alloying

    • Melting: The raw materials are melted in a furnace at temperatures around 1,000–1,200°C (1,832–2,192°F), depending on the alloy composition.
    • Alloying: The desired alloying elements are added to the molten metal to achieve the specific bronze composition required for the bearing.
    • Degassing and Fluxing: Impurities are removed using degassing agents or fluxes to ensure the metal is clean and free from inclusions.

    3. Casting

    • Mold Preparation: Sand casting, centrifugal casting, or continuous casting methods are used to shape the molten bronze into bearing blanks or sleeves.
    • Pouring: The molten bronze is poured into the prepared molds.
    • Cooling: The castings are allowed to cool and solidify in the molds.
    • Removal: Once solidified, the castings are removed from the molds.

    4. Machining

    • Rough Machining: The cast blanks are machined to approximate dimensions using lathes, milling machines, or CNC equipment.
    • Precision Machining: Final dimensions and tolerances are achieved through precision machining processes, such as turning, boring, and grinding.
    • Surface Finishing: The bearing surfaces are finished to the required smoothness and accuracy.

    5. Heat Treatment (if required)

    • Some bronze alloys may undergo heat treatment to improve mechanical properties, such as hardness or wear resistance.

    6. Quality Control

    • Dimensional Inspection: The bearings are checked for dimensional accuracy using precision measuring tools.
    • Material Testing: Tests such as hardness testing, chemical analysis, and microstructure examination ensure the material meets specifications.
    • Surface Inspection: The bearing surfaces are inspected for defects like cracks, porosity, or roughness.

    7. Lubrication (if required)

    • Some bronze bearings are impregnated with lubricants (e.g., oil or graphite) to enhance their self-lubricating properties.

    8. Final Finishing

    • Cleaning: The bearings are cleaned to remove any machining residues or contaminants.

    Bronze & brass standards

VIIPLUS employs centrifugal casting to manufacture bushings, rings, slide plates, wear plate, slide blocks, sleeves, and flanged plain bearings using various copper alloys that meet global standards such as EN 1982 and ASTM B271, including special alloys. For example, Tin bronze provide good wear resistance, high load carrying capacity and corrosion resistance. Tin ensures high durability and tensile strength, making it suitable for highly loaded, corrosion-prone machine components and friction parts in machines operating under high pressure and speed.
