Selecting Bronze Bearing Materials
The bearing bronzes fall into five alloy families with similar compositions and properties:
- Tin bronzes
- Leaded tin bronzes
- High-leaded tin bronzes
- Aluminum bronzes
- Manganese bronze
Members of each family have similar properties, with differences allowing selection based on economic considerations or the need to tailor alloys for particular applications.
Tin Bronzes
Tin’s principal function is to strengthen the alloys. The tin bronzes are strong, hard, and have very high ductility, giving them a high load-carrying capacity, good wear resistance, and the ability to withstand pounding. The tin bronzes’ hardness inhibits them from conforming easily to rough or misaligned shafts. They require a shaft hardness between 300-400 BHN and operate better with grease lubrication than other bronzes.
Leaded Tin Bronzes
Small amounts of lead improve machinability. A few also contain zinc to strengthen the alloys at lower cost than tin. The leaded bronzes otherwise have similar properties and applications as the tin bronzes.
High-Leaded Tin Bronzes
This family includes the most widely used bearing bronze alloys. They excel in antifriction and machining properties, with somewhat lower strength and hardness than the tin bronzes.High-leaded tin bronzes embed dirt particles well, conform easily to shaft irregularities, and can be used with unhardened shafts. The lead provides excellent machinability and prevents welding and seizing if the lubricant supply is interrupted.
Aluminum Bronzes
The aluminum bronzes are the strongest and most complex bearing bronzes. Their high aluminum content provides strength up to 68,000 psi yield and 120,000 tensile, allowing use at 50% higher loads than leaded tin bronzes.Aluminum bronzes require hardened shafts (550-600 BHN) with very smooth surfaces. They have excellent corrosion resistance and elevated temperature strength, but fairly low ductility and poor conformability.
Manganese Bronze
Manganese bronzes are modifications of Muntz metal-type alloys containing manganese, iron, aluminum, and lead. Like aluminum bronzes, they combine very high strength with excellent corrosion resistance. They require high shaft hardnesses and nonabrasive operating conditions.
Why are oilless bearings oilless?
Oilless bearing is a kind of product with self-lubricating property. Appropriate size holes are developed and well-arranged on the friction surface of copper-bearing as a metal matrix, and graphite or molybdenum disulfide are embedded as a solid lubricant. This rational combination combines the respective performance advantages of metal alloys and non-metallic friction-reducing materials to complement each other. It not only has the high bearing capacity of the metal but also has the lubrication property of the anti-wear material. So oilless bearing is especially suitable for the environment like no refueling, less refueling, high temperature, high load, and water environment. Material: These plates are typically made from materials like PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), graphite, or other self-lubricating materials, which have low friction coefficients and provide excellent wear resistance.
