Plain bushings Designs and variants

Plain bearings selection, also known as bushes, are widely used in both household appliances and industrial machinery. These components support loads through sliding or rotary motion, maintaining contact with a moving part. Typically cylindrical and devoid of moving elements, plain bearings are simple yet effective. viiplus offers plain bearings made from materials such as wrapped bronze, cast bronze, composite, steel sintered bronze, PTFE, POM, and bimetal. The different types of plain bushings, along with their designs and variations, are detailed below:

Our solid bronze bushings are available in both metric sizes and in straight or flanged designs, offering a versatile and durable solution for a wide range of applications. These bushings are ideal for oscillating movements in both radial and axial directions, as well as for low-rotational-speed applications.

Solid bronze bushings can be lubricated with oil or grease, which enhances their sliding properties, reduces wear, and helps prevent corrosion. For bushings with a bore diameter greater than 14 mm, an axial lubrication groove is incorporated into the sliding surface to ensure optimal lubrication performance.

All surfaces of our solid bronze bushings are precision-machined to meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

Wrapped Bronze Bushings

Our wrapped bronze bushings are available in both metric sizes and in straight or flanged designs. These bushings are manufactured by wrapping high-quality bronze strips, offering an ideal solution for applications in dirty or contaminated environments where relubrication is frequently necessary. They are highly resistant to shock loads and vibrations, particularly at slow speeds.

The diamond-shaped lubrication pockets on the sliding surface ensure reliable functionality with minimal need for frequent relubrication. These lubrication pockets are primarily designed for grease lubrication, while spherical indents are suitable for liquid lubricants like oil. Additionally, slide bearings with hole patterns provide long-term lubrication, ideal for grease applications. Bushings with diamond-shaped lubrication pockets can be easily replaced with slide bearings featuring hole patterns for improved lubrication efficiency.

Advantages:

  • Larger grease depot compared to bushings with grooves or simple lubrication indents, ensuring longer-lasting lubrication.
  • Extended running time and lubrication intervals compared to standard diamond-shaped lubrication pocket bushings.
  • Efficient collection of dirt and wear particles in the lubrication holes, helping maintain optimal performance.
  • Prevention of foreign particle buildup in lubrication indents, reducing the risk of wear.
  • Customizable width without affecting lubrication efficiency, making them adaptable to various application requirements.

These wrapped bronze bushings are a robust and reliable choice for heavy-duty environments, offering long-lasting performance with minimal maintenance.

These wrapped bronze bushings are a robust and reliable choice for heavy-duty environments, offering long-lasting performance with minimal maintenance.

PTFE Composite Bushings

PTFE composite bushings are available as straight bushings in both metric and inch sizes, as well as flanged bushings in metric sizes. These bushings are self-lubricating, maintenance-free, and offer long service life due to their low friction characteristics. Despite their compact design, they are capable of handling heavy radial loads and are ideal for slow rotational or oscillating movements. Additionally, they provide excellent dimensional stability and thermal conductivity.

PTFE composite bushings are constructed with a sheet steel backing and a porous layer of sintered tin/bronze. The sintered layer is then filled with a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and molybdenum disulfide mixture through a rolling process. This unique structure combines the mechanical strength of the tin/bronze with the superior sliding and lubricating properties of the PTFE mixture, ensuring optimal performance.

This material is ideal for applications requiring durability, low friction, and resistance to harsh conditions.

Running-in Period:

During a brief running-in period, small amounts of PTFE material from the running-in layer are transferred to the counter surfaces. Once this transfer is complete, the bushings exhibit their full low-friction and wear-resistant properties, providing smooth operation and reduced maintenance over time.

These PTFE composite bushings are an excellent choice for applications where self-lubrication, wear resistance, and low friction are critical.

POM Composite Bushings: Metal-Polymer Composite Bushing Material

Material
Base material, steel.

Bearing surface POM.
Version
Steel tin-plated.

POM composite bushings are available as straight bushings in both metric and inch sizes. These bushings feature pockets in the sliding surface, making them ideal for applications that require minimal maintenance under challenging operating conditions. They are particularly well-suited for environments where lubrication cannot be supplied continuously or frequently, such as in contaminated environments. To ensure optimal performance, the grease reservoirs should be filled prior to installation. Despite their compact design, POM composite bushings are capable of handling heavy radial loads and are highly resistant to misalignment. They are suitable for slow rotational, oscillating, and linear movements.

Construction:

POM composite bushings consist of a sheet steel backing, with a layer of sintered tin/bronze, onto which a covering layer of acetal resin (POM – polyoxymethylene) is applied. This resin layer, which contains special additives, includes pockets designed to retain grease, ensuring smooth operation and reduced wear. The POM layer is firmly bonded to the sintered tin/bronze, combining the durability of the metal with the self-lubricating and wear-resistant properties of the polymer.

Benefits:

  • Grease retention: The lubrication pockets help maintain a steady supply of grease, reducing the need for frequent relubrication.
  • Misalignment resistance: The thickness of the POM layer makes these bushings less sensitive to misalignment and edge loading, ensuring longer service life and reliability.
  • Heavy load capacity: Despite their compact size, these bushings are designed to handle heavy radial loads effectively.
  • Minimal maintenance: Ideal for harsh environments where continuous lubrication is not possible.

POM composite bushings offer a reliable and low-maintenance solution for applications that demand high load capacity, resistance to misalignment, and effective lubrication in difficult operating conditions.
