The unique prelubricated bearings feature a PTFE-based bearing surface that allows for smooth, low-friction operation without the need for lubrication, maintenance, or expensive lubrication systems. When lubrication is allowed, it can further enhance the performance of these bearings.
Self-Lubricating Bearing Length
When designing bearings, the shaft diameter is typically dictated by the requirements for physical stability or stiffness. The primary variable to determine is the length of the bearing or the width of a thrust washer.
Short or narrow bearings tend to have a shorter wear life, so it’s advisable to maintain a high length-to-diameter ratio, ideally up to a maximum of 2:1.
Conversely, longer bearings are generally not recommended due to potential issues with shaft deflection. Additionally, they present challenges in terms of manufacturing and installation.

Boundary lubrication

Thermal properties
Technical Information
PTFE-based bearings can operate in ambient temperatures ranging from -328°F to +536°F (-200°C to +280°C). While higher operating temperatures may reduce the bearing’s wear life, the reliability of the product remains consistent. Heat is generated in all bearings, even under light loads. Without lubrication, this heat must be transferred through the bearing and dissipated by the housing. The ptfe based bearing steel composite structure offers both high thermal conductivity and a thermal expansion rate similar to that of steel.
Where axial location is necessary, it is advisable to use ptfe or pom thrust washers in conjunction with ptfe or pom bearings, even when the axial loads are light.
Boundary lubrication
Technical Information
Boundary lubrication occurs when the shaft rubs against the bearing with little to no lubricant separating the two surfaces. In this lubrication regime, the selection of bearing material is crucial for optimal performance.
Conventional bearings operating under boundary lubrication typically exhibit a coefficient of friction ranging from 0.08 to 0.15. In contrast, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has a lower coefficient of friction, usually between 0.02 and 0.06 in similar conditions.
Due to the close contact between the shaft and bearing, wear is unavoidable in conventional plain bearings. However, the self-lubricating properties of PTFE-based bearing materials significantly reduce wear in boundary lubrication scenarios. Often, the resulting wear pattern resembles a burnished surface.

Bearing Diameter Adjustments for Temperature Changes
When a PTFE or POM bearing is subjected to elevated temperatures, the diameter of the shaft should be adjusted to maintain proper fit:
- For a PTFE bearing, reduce the shaft diameter by 0.0002 inch per 100°F (0.010 mm per 100°C) above normal room temperature.
- For a POM bearing, reduce the shaft diameter by 0.0005 inch per 100°F (0.025 mm per 100°C) above normal room temperature.
If the housing material is bronze, zinc, or aluminum-based alloy, the housing bore diameter should be reduced by the following amounts in addition to the shaft diameter reduction:
| Housing Material | Reduction per 100°F | Reduction per 100°C |
|---|---|---|
| Brass or other Copper Alloys | 0.025% | 0.05% |
| Aluminum Alloys | 0.05% | 0.10% |
| Zinc Base Alloys | 0.08% | 0.15% |
This additional reduction in housing bore diameter provides an increased interference fit to the bearing when operating at elevated temperatures.
Grooving
Grooves, whether used alone or in conjunction with a hole, are essential for ensuring an adequate supply of lubricant to the bearing. Typically, a simple groove that extends across the width of the bearing is effective. The recommended placement of the oil groove should consider the bearing load zone and the bearing split. Various groove profiles can be easily milled or broached into the bearing. To enhance the formation of a lubricating film, the recognized and trailing edges of the groove should be tapered. We also offer special PTFE bearings with embossed or milled grooves upon request. For further details, please consult our Applications Engineering Department.
