PTFE composite bushings material
PTFE composite plain bearings combine the mechanical strength of steel with the low friction of a PTFE-based self-lubricating lead-free sliding layer. The intermediate layer of porous tin bronze creates a strong bond between the backing and sliding surfaces and also improves the dissipation of heat generated during operation. To protect the bearings from corrosion, the steel backing is tin-plated. With the exception of the sliding surface, PTFE composite dry sliding bearings can be machined. Calibration is possible within certain limits.
PTFE composite bushings lubrication
The PTFE-based sliding surface permits smooth, low-friction operation without lubrication. During a short running-in phase, there will be some transfer of PTFE material from the sliding contact surface to the counterface. After this transfer, the characteristic low friction and wear properties of these bearings will be achieved.
The presence, or continuous supply of oil or other non-corrosive fluids may be advantageous and improve the performance of these bearings.
Tips for bearing maintenance
- 1.Handle and store properly
To prevent contaminants including moisture, dust, or dirt from entering the bearings, they should be properly handled and stored. First, the bearings should be placed horizontally in their original packaging in a clean, dry, and room temperature environment. Avoid handling bearings unnecessarily, for example, if they are removed prematurely, they may be exposed to corrosion or contaminants. Bearings are precision parts and should be handled with care. Therefore, dropped components should not be used, as this can cause premature failure.
Proper equipment should be used when handling bearings. Non-dedicated tools used during bearing mounting and dismounting may cause unnecessary damage, dents, and wear. For example, bearing pullers or induction heaters are specifically designed for bearings.
- 3.Check the bearing box and shaft
Check the physical condition of the housing and shaft before mounting the bearings. Use a soft cloth to wipe the surface until you are familiar with the correct installation procedure.
The correct method of mounting the bearing shall be used, depending on the type of bearing and the type of fit. Radial ball bearing rings can be installed in a variety of ways, from sliding fit to the tight fit, depending on the type of load, speed, and vibration level. Applying pressure on the wrong ring during installation may cause damage to the roll. Similarly, the too loose or too tight fit should be avoided to avoid the smooth over low or circular shaft bearing or incorrect housing.
One of the main causes of bearing failure is lubrication failure. This includes using the wrong lubricant and using too much or too little. Choose the right lubricant by considering environmental conditions, temperature, speed, and load. - 6.Avoid temperature beyond bearing range
Heating steel bearings beyond the limits of their design can permanently deform or soften the bearing material, resulting in reduced bearing capacity and equipment failure. The first step is to select bearings suitable for your temperature range. Note discoloration of rings, rolling elements, and retainers during regular maintenance, as this may indicate overheating. This may be due to high operating temperature and improper lubrication, so it needs to be brought to your attention quickly.
- 7.Prevent corrosion as much as possible
Corrosion is the natural enemy of bearings. Over time, corrosion can occur if the bearing is exposed to moisture. This can lead to rusting into the raceway and ultimately premature failure of bearings and equipment. Wearing gloves will ensure that sweat or other liquids do not enter the bearing. When designing specifically for corrosive environments, the choice of suitable bearings is critical. For example, 316 stainless steel bearings with seals are usually a good choice in Marine or chemical environments.
- 8.Choose alternatives carefully
If the bearing does reach its useful life, replace it with a bearing of the same or higher quality as the original. In the long run, lower-quality alternatives are likely to fail and may lead to more expensive equipment failures.
Bearings rarely fail without any warning signals. Too much noise, vibration, or rising temperatures can be signs of a deeper problem. If any abnormal bearing operation occurs, closer monitoring should be carried out.
