The structure of the bearings consists of rigid steel or corrosion-resistant bronze backing, which provides mechanical strength, while a porous sintered bronze interlayer impregnated with a homogeneous mixture of PTFE and lead provides low friction and high wear resistance.

The low friction of the PTFE bearings reduces power losses for improved energy efficiency, while the wear-resistant bronze layer provides extended service life. Being self-lubricating, the bearings require little to no maintenance. However, they can also be used with a lubricant to prevent potential shaft/bearing seizure under boundary conditions.

The advantages of oil-free self-lubricating bearings are as follows:

1. Oil-free or oil-less lubricated bearings are suitable for places where oil cannot be filled or it is difficult to fill. They can be used without or with little maintenance.

The nine advantages of oil-free self-lubricating bearings

Self-lubricating bearing is developed on the metal friction surface of the bearing matrix with holes arranged in order and appropriate size, and embedded in molybdenum disulfide, graphite, and other composite self-lubricating block embedded in the metal sleeve, the composite bearing made of solid lubricant friction area up to 25-65%. The solid self – lubricating block can work normally at 280℃.But because of its low mechanical strength, bearing self-lubricating bearing capacity is weak, easy to produce deformation, it can be embedded in the metal hole groove to suppress this defect, the formation of metal part bearing function, self-lubricating block lubrication function. The lubrication mechanism of the self-lubricating bearing is that during the sliding friction process between the shaft and the sleeve, part of the molecular oil-free bearing of the self-lubricating material is transferred to the metal surface of the shaft to fill in the tiny non-plane and form a stable solid lubrication film, which causes the friction between the solid lubrication film and prevents the adhesive wear of the shaft and the sleeve. This rational combination combines the complementary advantages of copper alloy and non-metallic anti-wear materials, which is especially suitable for non-oil, high temperature, high load, low speed, anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, and strong radiation environment, as well as for special working conditions in which lubricating grease cannot be added to water or other solutions.

PTFE composite bushings material

PTFE composite plain bearings combine the mechanical strength of steel with the low friction of a PTFE-based self-lubricating lead-free sliding layer. The intermediate layer of porous tin bronze creates a strong bond between the backing and sliding surfaces and also improves the dissipation of heat generated during operation. To protect the bearings from corrosion, the steel backing is tin-plated. With the exception of the sliding surface, PTFE composite dry sliding bearings can be machined. Calibration is possible within certain limits.

PTFE composite bushings lubrication

The PTFE-based sliding surface permits smooth, low-friction operation without lubrication. During a short running-in phase, there will be some transfer of PTFE material from the sliding contact surface to the counterface. After this transfer, the characteristic low friction and wear properties of these bearings will be achieved.
The presence, or continuous supply of oil or other non-corrosive fluids may be advantageous and improve the performance of these bearings.

Tips for bearing maintenance

  • 1.Handle and store properly

To prevent contaminants including moisture, dust, or dirt from entering the bearings, they should be properly handled and stored. First, the bearings should be placed horizontally in their original packaging in a clean, dry, and room temperature environment. Avoid handling bearings unnecessarily, for example, if they are removed prematurely, they may be exposed to corrosion or contaminants. Bearings are precision parts and should be handled with care. Therefore, dropped components should not be used, as this can cause premature failure.

  • 2.Use professional tools

Proper equipment should be used when handling bearings. Non-dedicated tools used during bearing mounting and dismounting may cause unnecessary damage, dents, and wear. For example, bearing pullers or induction heaters are specifically designed for bearings.

  • 3.Check the bearing box and shaft

Check the physical condition of the housing and shaft before mounting the bearings. Use a soft cloth to wipe the surface until you are familiar with the correct installation procedure.
