What Is A Self-lubricating Bearing

A self-lubricating bearing, also known as maintenance-free or greaseless bearings, is a bronze, iron or metal component with impregnated lubricant oil. As a self-lubricating bearings supplier, we impregnate the bearing with liquid lubricant specific to your unique application or operating temperatures. This allows the bearing to provide their own lubrication during operation without requiring the application of grease or oil lubricant.

Short service life and large consumption of lubricating oil during operation.

The biggest advantage of metal bearings is convenient processing, processing cost and price advantage is obvious compared with engineering plastic bearings.Secondly, it has good impact resistance and a variety of metal materials, which is suitable for most of the application needs of conventional bearing equipment.


Engineering plastic bearings have the advantages of poor mechanical performance, low speed, low load, high temperature resistance and low upper limit of high temperature.

(1) The finished product has low density, light volume, small starting torque during high-speed operation, and can reduce the energy consumption of rotation. It is suitable for application in the design of modern lightweight structure products.

(2)The preparation method is open mold injection molding method, the production cycle of the finished product is short, fast, low manufacturing cost, and the flexibility of the design of the product is large, can be designed into a more complex structure form, the overall economy is good, easy to large quantities, large-scale production, can improve production efficiency, save manufacturing costs.

(3) Engineering plastic bearings themselves have excellent self-lubrication, can meet the engineering state that can not use lubricating oil (such as: food, packaging, medical machinery, etc.), product maintenance cost is low.

(4) It has the characteristics of wear-resisting, low friction and anti-bite. It can add wear-resisting elements according to the need of the cost, reduce the friction coefficient to a lower level, and thus reduce the friction heat to maintain better performance.

(5)Based on its own material characteristics, engineering plastic bearings have the use performance of shock mitigation and vibration reduction, and can greatly reduce the occurrence of operating noise in operation, and can be applied to special environments.

(6) With stable high heat resistance and stable specifications, temperature difference interval is generally in -250℃~+320℃, can meet the operating temperature of most engineering conditions.

(7)The preparation of engineering plastic bearings has high flexibility, and different raw materials can be selected according to different performance requirements to enhance toughness. Thus, the toughness can be increased to enhance the impact resistance and fracture resistance of the product. Similarly, the stiffness can also be increased to improve the hardness standard.

Ceramic bearing

The processing method of preparing ceramic bearings is high and the cost is high, which hinders the popularization of ceramic bearings to a great extent.

(1) Ceramic materials have strong corrosion resistance, so ceramic bearings are almost not afraid of corrosion, and can work in special harsh environments full of corrosive media.

(2) Because the density of ceramic rolling ball is lower than that of steel on ceramic rolling bearing, the weight is lighter, and the centrifugal action of outer ring can be reduced by 40% when rotating, so that the service life of the product can be greatly extended.

(3) Ceramic materials are less affected by thermal expansion and cold contraction than metals. Reasonable arrangement of the clearance between each ceramic bearing can be applied to the bearing in the environment with large temperature difference fluctuations.

(4)The fatigue life of the all-ceramic bearing is 10~50 times longer than that of the all-steel bearing, and the life of the mixed ceramic bearing is about 3~5 times longer than that of the all-steel bearing. The service life of the ceramic bearing is much higher than that of the metal bearing.

(5)The wear resistance and elastic modulus of ceramic bearings are higher than those of metal bearings, and the friction coefficient is low. Therefore, the lubrication performance of ceramic bearings with lubricating oil added in the case of thinness or lack of oil is not lower than that of traditional lubricants commonly used in traditional steel bearings.

How Does A Self-Lubricating Bearing Work?

Self-lubricating bearings work by having lubricant impregnated within the sliding layer of the bearing. This lubricant can either be liquid (oil) or solid (graphite, MoS2, lead) based on the requirements of the application (such as operating temperature). As the bearing operates, the lubricant is released through pores in the sliding layer, lubricating the bearing surface. The lubricant is uniformly dispersed throughout the sliding layer and thus there is no reduction in low friction bearing performance, even if the sliding layer becomes worn. A “running-in” surface is also usually included at the top of the sliding layer to provide low friction bearing performance at start up before the impregnated lubricant reaches the bearing surface.

  • Oil lubrication is recommended for many applications, as different supply methods can be adapted to suit different operating conditions and the machine’s design. When selecting the most appropriate oil lubrication method for a bearing arrangement, the  application requirements should be considered.

How Do Self Lubricated Bearings Work?

Self-lubricated bearings ceaselessly counteract sliding element friction. That’s because, unlike their high-maintenance counterparts, this self-sufficient bearing type doesn’t require a supplementary oil feed system. Instead, the all-important lubricant, the oily stuff that produces a thin film around the bearing parts, is part of the machine component. Granted, the advantages of this friction-diminishing arrangement are many.

Oil lubrication method for a bearing arrangement, the following application requirements should be considered:

1.Required quantity and viscosity of the oil
2.Speed and hydrodynamic frictional losses
3.Permissible bearing temperature

How to choose the lubricating oil from the bearing, blind choice of lubricating oil: lubricating oil plays the role of lubrication, cooling, cleaning and sealing. The quality of lubricating oil is directly related to the service life of the engine. Oil blackening is oil deterioration: engine oil is working in a more demanding high temperature conditions, easy to oxidize deterioration, produce acidic substances and superposition into polymer sediments, so as to destroy the lubrication. Diesel car oil: gasoline engine oil and diesel engine oil. Although gasoline engines and diesel engines work under the same conditions of high temperature, high pressure, high speed and high load, they are still quite different.

Lubricating oils

To lubricate super-precision bearings, high quality lubricating oils without EP additives are generally recommended. The requisite viscosity of the oil can be determined following the recommendations in Lubrication conditions – the viscosity ratio κ, and is essentially a function of bearing size, speed and operating temperature.
With oil-air lubrication systems, many oil types are suitable. Oils with a viscosity of 40 to 100 mm2/s at 40 °C (105 °F) are typically used as are oils with EP additives which are preferable, especially for roller bearings. Oils with a viscosity of 10 to 15 mm2/s at 40 °C (105 °F) are typically used for oil jet lubrication, whereas oil mist lubrication systems typically use oils with a viscosity of 32 mm2/s at 40 °C (105 °F).
The intervals at which the oil should be changed when using the oil bath, circulating oil and oil jet methods, depend mainly on the operating conditions and the quantity of oil involved. When oil drop, oil mist or oil-air lubrication is used, the lubricant is “lost” and is therefore supplied to the bearings only once.

Oil cleanliness

Oil cleanliness, which affects bearing service life and performance, requires an effective sealing system. Even with effective seals, however, the condition of the oil should be monitored on a regular basis. This is particularly true for oil re-circulation systems where the ingress of coolants, cutting oils, and other liquid contaminants can alter the lubricating properties of the oil.

Oil cleanliness requirements can be described by the number of particles per millilitre of oil for different particle sizes. ISO 4406 provides a coding system for the level of solid contaminants. The oil cleanliness requirements for high-precision applications like electro-spindles go beyond this coding. The maximum particle size should not exceed 5 μm. The acceptable contamination levels can be specified as an extrapolation of the contamination codes to
ISO 4406 (diagram 2):

  • As defined by Machine Design, bearing service life is, “The life of a bearing under actual operating conditions before it fails or needs to be replaced.”
    Simple enough.But which factors contribute to how long you can expect your bearing to last in your “typical” environment?

Calculating life expectancy determines the bearing solution with consideration of bearing material fatigue under defined operating.Service life is the life of a bearing under actual operating conditions before it fails … to applied dynamic and static loads as they impact service life and reliability.

How long is the service life of oilless plain bearing & self-lubricating bronze bushings?

1) Lubrication is critical

Without good lubrication levels (whether manually-greased rolling element bearings, or self-lubricated composites), bearing friction will build. Which means heat will build, and so, too, the possibility of bearing overheating and failure. Environmental factors like dust and contamination can also have a negative impact on lubrication (causing a lapping compound to form around the hardware), which will result in a shorter bearing service life. Good lubrication is very important.

2) Bearing load is a key contributor

Knowing the full load potential of an application is key to determining bearing lifetime. This is especially true with cantilevered and uneven loads (as in construction equipment lifting applications). Best practice is to “overdesign” a bearing by overestimating the highest load it may encounter in order to leave some room for additional weight.

3) Operating temperatures (not too hot!)

Matching the right material formula to the anticipated temperature, as we recently explored, Bearing Temperatures and Plastic Composites) Temperatures impact press fits and the thermal expansion, which, in turn, impact the tolerance between the shaft and the ID of the bearing. These all contribute to the total service lifetime of the bearing.

4) Speeds are important, too

Bearings that are improperly matched to the SPM (or speed for minute) of the rotary application will wear more quickly and have a detrimental impact on service life. Good bearing alignment is also important.

While the above are the primary contributors to how long you can expect a bearing to last, it’s important to also consider additional factors like material storage. Some materials, like etched-PTFE Rulon, require a UV-blocking bag or else the etching will degrade in standard warehouse conditions. For best results and longer service, bearing materials must be stored and handled properly. Read more about bearing wear.
